Larry Lederman remembers how Young Sounds of Arizona came into being as a multi-high-school jazz band of teenage musicians. What a concept it was! Student musicians from schools that were zealous sports rivals would get together regularly to play jazz.

Young Sounds of Arizona bands will perform in a joint concert with the Mesa Community Performing Arts Jazz Ensemble at the Mesa Community College Performing Arts Centers.

Trumpeter Alex Price started classical music lessons in the second grade. He loved playing piano and clarinet in school bands, and switched to trumpet in the seventh grade.

But he was thinking about quitting music when a teacher put him in a school jazz group. “That was a really new experience, more fun and creative, really cool with a sense of camaraderie,” said Alex, 17.

Our annual final concert of the season is at the MIM, 4725 E Mayo Blvd, Phoenix. Tickets are $17.50 General Admission, $12.50 Students.

Emily Ruth, bassist in one of The Young Sounds of Arizona’s two bands, had an early start in music performance: She first played toy percussion instruments around the house with her sister and brother. She wanted to be a rock drummer until she heard the sound of an upright bass in elementary school.
