Trumpeter Alex Price started classical music lessons in the second grade. He loved playing piano and clarinet in school bands, and switched to trumpet in the seventh grade.

But he was thinking about quitting music when a teacher put him in a school jazz group. “That was a really new experience, more fun and creative, really cool with a sense of camaraderie,” said Alex, 17.

Emily Ruth, bassist in one of The Young Sounds of Arizona’s two bands, had an early start in music performance: She first played toy percussion instruments around the house with her sister and brother. She wanted to be a rock drummer until she heard the sound of an upright bass in elementary school.

Tenor saxophonist Andrew Gross knows what it’s like to be a student-member of the Young Sounds of Arizona big bands: He was in the bands in 1995-96, before enrolling in the jazz studies program at Arizona State University.

“Full-circle” is an apt descriptive of trombonist-educator Vincent “Vince” Wedge, who performed as a student trombonist in the Young Sounds of Arizona high-school honor band in 1976-77, and eventually became the organization’s director.
