Tenor saxophonist Andrew Gross knows what it’s like to be a student-member of the Young Sounds of Arizona big bands: He was in the bands in 1995-96, before enrolling in the jazz studies program at Arizona State University.
“Full-circle” is an apt descriptive of trombonist-educator Vincent “Vince” Wedge, who performed as a student trombonist in the Young Sounds of Arizona high-school honor band in 1976-77, and eventually became the organization’s director.
Called “the best young talent in the Valley”, Young Sounds of Arizona is 40 young jazz musicians ages 14 to 19, chosen by audition each year from Phoenix area schools. Each year the big jazz bands and small jazz ensembles of this unique local wonder present a concert showcasing these young people and their music.
